Today's election day in the state senate 16th district. This, like most elections, is the choice of the lesser of two evils. But, they are two distinct candidates: a fiscally conservative Republican who wants smaller government and a money-spending liberal Democrat.
Andy Vidak is a farmer, and not as well polished as the attorney-turned-politician Leticia Perez. If the Democrats win, it will be a long time when the Republicans have any power again.
What is prison life like? Lt. Gregory Bergersen from Valley State Prison in Chowchilla joined the program. He says that the facility has gone under a successful transition from an all-female population to all-male.
Prisoners can be in single-cells or can also range from 2-8 per cell. Cell phones are forbidden for inmates to use. They do not have internet access. They do not have a full cable TV lineup, just the local channels and some religious options.
He says that 90% of prisoners just want to do their time and go on parole. They have to focus on that other 10% who are troublemakers.
Pensions are what is sinking Detroit. While Fresno says they have their pensions under control, the rest of the state needs to watch out. The concept of government-funded pensions are well past its prime.
I don't like the idea of paying for city employees when they no longer for the city. This former city employee in Vernon shows why pensions are corrupt.
Congressman Tom McClintock joined the show. He addressed a Fresno Bee columnist's assertions that he was a hypocrite for accepting a pension after initially rejecting it. He said in 1982, when he first won a seat to Sacramento, he rejected the pension. he never thought he would be able to get back into the pension rolls, until he told he would be. He says his criticism of the state pension system (and social security for that matter) does not disqualify him from accepting a pension.
McClintock didn't say no when asked if would run for governor, but he says he has his hands full in Washington. When it comes to immigration, McClintock believes legal immigration is great and what this country was built upon. He says there already is a pathway to citizenship, like millions of citizens do.
