It's a new school year, and the San Joaquin Valley Air Board is threatening us and using scare tactics about dirty air. They are hanging that federal $29 million fine over us in get us to stop living our lives. No errands, no drive through, no idling they tell us. The fines come in the form of $12 extra in vehicle license registration, just for those in the Valley.
I'm not denying there is a smog problem. It's not our fault entirely for driving cars. Lots of the traffic that comes through the Valley comes from the north and south, yet they don't have to pay. That's not fair. Where does all that pollution go from cars idling in traffic on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge? Right down in the Valley.
The Air Board decided in 2010 to pass the $12 fee onto drivers. I wish they would use common sense and penalize those who deserve it, not those in the Valley.
Executive Director Seyed Sadredin joined the show. He said he would rather lobby the EPA to change the law and penalty than sue them. He doesn't like the $29 million penalty either. But, he contends the penalty is collected by the Air Board and reinvest it in the Valley.
This is nothing new, but we pay way too many taxes. I just read a partial list, and I'm exhausted. One day, we'll get it right. Callers chimed in with even more real taxes, including lumber taxes, water and the above mentioned pollution tax.
